Always evolving, and Inspired by wonderful teachers and all kinds of artists my work focuses on where I am, and what I love. Dramatic lighting excites me, and I am attracted to bright color combinations. I love the feeling of focus, the problem solving, the mess and the magic.
Drawing and painting have been a lifelong interest. My favorite subjects being Art and Recess in grade school, and Art and Physical Education in high school; at UC Davis I majored in Art and Psychology. Looking back, an obvious pattern emerges. At University I was fortunate to be exposed to and learn from prominent Bay Area artists such as Wayne Thiebaud, Robert Arneson, Manuel Neri, and Roy Deforest.
After a seven-year stint in broadcast advertising, I had a successful twenty-year career in California real estate. No art to speak of until.....
A beautiful land, infinite inspiration, and time to do what I love. I chose to work in Acrylics because there is so much to be done with that one medium. My small home studio does not allow for a lot of equipment, and with 10-12 tubes of basic pigments, a couple dozen bruses and a bucket of water, I can do so many different things. And after ten years, I have still just scratched the surface of those possibilities.
Inspired by the beauty of the Hawaiian Islands and their people, these pieces reflect the aloha of the land - from mauka to makai. My style can range from Primitive Folk Art to Photographic Realism with a touch of Pop Art and a sprinkling of Impressionism. I like to try different styles to match my mood and sometimes imitate my heroes'. It comes together to be "How Eye See It"
During the pandemic years, I fell into a therapy of painting portraits of family and friends to lift my spirit. It was a satisfying way to concentrate on less seen and beloved faces. Working from photographs, I derive much joy in recreating moments of our lives, and the people in them.
